Berries reward you with premium margins and punish you with premium risk. Soft, moist and fragile, they bruise from the lightest knock and weep the moment the cold chain slips. Whether you export by reefer or fulfil online orders by courier, these five changes cut damage where it actually happens.

1. Ventilate to remove field heat and moisture

Trapped heat and condensation are what turn firm berries into mush. Vent holes in the base and lid let the cold chain do its job and stop moisture pooling. A well-vented punnet keeps fruit drier, firmer and mould-free for longer.

2. Suspend the fruit away from the box wall

Most transit damage happens where fruit presses against a hard surface. Suspension-style e-commerce packs hold berries in a cradle away from the outer wall, so drops and vibration are absorbed by the structure instead of the fruit.

3. Stop the stack — use shallow cells

When berries pile several deep, the bottom layer carries the weight of everything above it. Shallow packs and single-layer or cell designs limit how much fruit rests on any one piece, which dramatically reduces crushing.

Field note: importers who moved strawberries from deep bulk punnets to vented, shallow-cell packs consistently report fewer arrival-quality claims — the fruit simply travels better.

4. Fit the carton, not just the punnet

A punnet that slides inside its carton is a punnet that bounces. Match punnet footprint to carton dimensions so packs sit tight, stack square and transfer load through the walls of the box rather than through the fruit.

5. Keep the cold chain unbroken — and pack for it

Packaging cannot fix a broken cold chain, but it can buy tolerance. Materials that stay rigid at low temperature, plus ventilation that lets cold air circulate, help fruit ride out the inevitable temperature excursions between packhouse, port and doorstep.

Bring it together

The biggest gains come from combining these: a vented, shallow, suspension pack sized to your carton, in a material tuned for your lane. That is exactly what our berry range is engineered to do. Send us your berry type, pack weight and shipping method and we will spec a pack that arrives intact.
